VIENNA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Annually in December, Vienna University of Technology [Technische Universitaet Wien] recognizes about 10 to 15 of its graduates from 50 years ago in a festive ceremony, awarding Golden Diplomas. The selection of those 10 to 15 graduates from among perhaps 500 engineering and 50 doctoral graduates at the time, and across all fields, is somewhat mysterious. But the pomp is impressive, with the University President giving a speech and all Deans and Vice-Deans in attendance. My 1967 and then 1972 diplomas were transferred after a detailed laudatio by the Vice-Dean of the School of Mathematics and Geodesy. No question, the Golden Diplomas are larger, prettier than the original diplomas, and the ceremony impresses very much more than the original graduation event ever did in 1967 and 1972.

At that period, this ceremony occurred about 3 times per academic year. Currently the number of annual doctoral degrees awarded in Vienna is much larger.
